Carrot Cake #3

I did say a while back that there’s another one coming, right?

This was made back in early August, as part of the Wellington on a Plate event. Our workplace participated in the Wellington Bake Club, where a group of people (in this case, my colleagues) get together for 4 weeks, baking according to the challenges, and compete to become the baker of year. This was our second challenge: vegetable cake. I unfortunately took a day off, which happens to be the same day where we all present our work and have them judged. I ended up having to make it prior and leave it in the fridge at work, so they can bring it out and help my cake participate – the bad news is I didn’t get to eat any cake, but the good news is that I won this round!

So here it is, my trusty carrot cake that never fails to please! (thus far)

Lemon Cake – literally!

We were invited to my husband’s colleague’s 60th birthday, and when I asked what we could bring, he said “Lemon cake please!”

A big lemon cake lover, I wondered how to decorate it, as I couldn’t seem to gather any more information of what his other hobbies are. At the end, I thought there aren’t many lemon cakes that look like lemon online, so why not make one?

So here it is, raved and gobbled down within minutes by 30 people, the lemon cake!

The message reads:

Happy birthday Neil!

Fairy Cake (Barbie doll cake)

This is definitely something I’ve always wanted to try my hands on!

I’m glad that I got a chance to try making a barbie cake, it was so much fun!!!

When I looked up youtube clips for an example, the demonstrator said “You can always add more.” and I totally agree! When I’ve done the skirt I felt like I could add some pearls here, some flowers there, felt like a little girl, need to pretty up the princess with lots of accessories and decorations!

The order was placed by my colleague Vinita, who was trying to find a cake for her daughter’s 4th birthday and I mentioned that I make cakes. She had her mind set on fairy (I think it’s a Sagittarius thing, my wedding was based on fairies, I got another query for a fairy cake for December and Vinita’s daughter also wants a fairy cake!)

Her daughter loves purple and pink, and she managed to find a barbie that’s all purple, which also came with wings! I unfortunately had to strip her naked and detach her wings, and started my first attempt at a barbie cake.

I didn’t have a dome to bake the cake in, but I did have a large cupcake tin so I made one of that, flipped the base upside down, placed the top on where the bottom was, added another 7″ round cake to the base for the skirt, then shaved the cake to the shape of the dress (Let me know if you actually understand what I’ve just described!) I must admit there are thousands of photos of barbie cakes on Google, but so many of them have skirts so big I wondered if the barbie could still walk with 10 layers of petticoat underneath, so I was determined to go for a princess-skirt-size and not Queen-Elizabeth-on-the-throne size.

In the end I used 19 Wilton tips to make this fairy, and I am very proud of this! She stands 30cm tall.

Philippine chocolate brownie cake

Our ex flatmate Gaetan got in contact with me, asking if I could make a cake for his Filipino girlfriend. When I asked him what flavour he wanted, he couldn’t decide for a while, but ended up going with chocolate brownie as it’s her favourite flavour! (I think chocolate is many girls’ favourite!)

They were to bring the cake to the restaurant to share with friends after dinner, so he came to pick up the cake just before their night out.

This was an interesting one, I would have made a rectangular cake actually, but as he sent me a photo of the flag on a round cake, I was under the impression that he wanted a round cake (correct me if I was wrong?) so here you go! A rectangular flag on a round cake! How about that!

Honestly I was very surprised how red the icing turned out, I suppose the camera did some magic too!

Barbell cake!

Now this is one giant cake!

My husband’s colleague had her 40th, and as she’s a gym bunny, we thought a theme around exercise is something to go with.

After some thoughts, I decided on something like dumbbells or barbells.

She asked for a chocolate cake, and it needs to serve around 50 people, so off I went!

It wasn’t until I hit Google that I discovered how hard it is to find dumbbell cakes. I mean, dumbbell/barbell and cake in the same sentence? That’s difficult!!

BUT, nonetheless, I was inspired by a dumbbell cake where the bells are made of round cakes cut in half vertically, then placed on it’s side.

I thought about it, and wondered what happens when someone’s standing on cake, tries to lift up a ridiculously heavy barbell?

She would fall through the cake, of course! So here’s my inspiration!

The cake itself was around 6kg, and used up 18 eggs! And good on Alex for eating up the barbell all by herself! I love it when someone loves exercises but is not afraid to eat cake!  What’s the fun in exercising so hard and not allowing yourself to enjoy a little?

Here’s the cake in its entire glory!

Now look at little Alex struggling to lift up the bells!

Scooby-Doo chocolate birthday cake

After a long draught at my Trademe account, I got an urgent order for a mother’s 6 year old son’s birthday.

It WAS the last week of the term, in fact, last day, so I wasn’t swamped with work and could manage whipping up a cake (I really must practise getting up to speed a bit, this cake still took me half a day!)

She requested a 10-inch chocolate brownie cake with buttercream icing, and of course, Scooby-Doo on top.

So here it is! (by the way Caiden loves yellow)

Music Cupcakes

It has been a while since my last post! (Isn’t it always the case!)

Since then I had been busying with end-of-term businesses at the school, as well as being newly engaged I was excitedly planning my still-a-while-to-go wedding!

Anyway, my flatmate (also a music teacher) was having a house concert nearing the end of the term, and asked if I could make her some music-themed cupcakes for the kids. She asked for a basic chocolate cupcake, and here’s what I came up with! I thought these were cute 😛
